To find how much insulation you need, calculate the square footage of the walls, ceilings, or floors you’re insulating, then divide by the coverage stated on the insulation package (which depends on the R-value and thickness). For batts, measure the cavity dimensions and stud spacing (16 or 24 inches on center). For blown-in insulation, the bag label lists coverage at a given R-value. Subtract window and door openings. Recommended R-value depends on your climate and where you’re insulating. As a general guide, attics often call for R-38 to R-60, walls for R-13 to R-21, and floors for R-25 to R-30, with colder climates needing higher values. The U.S. Department of Energy publishes recommendations by climate zone—check yours before buying. Higher R-value means more material or thicker batts. Set your target R-value first, since it directly determines how much insulation and how many inches you need.
Q3. What’s the difference between batts, rolls, and blown-in insulation?
Batts are pre-cut panels that fit between studs and joists, ideal for standard wall and floor cavities. Rolls are continuous and you cut them to length, good for long open runs. Blown-in (loose-fill) insulation is machine-blown into attics and wall cavities, filling irregular spaces and gaps well, and is measured by coverage at a target depth. Batts and rolls suit DIY framing work; blown-in covers large attic areas fast but usually needs a blower (often rented with material purchase).
Q4. What type of insulation material should I choose?
Fiberglass is the most common, affordable, and DIY-friendly, available in batts, rolls, and blown-in form. Mineral wool (rock wool) resists fire and sound better and is denser. Cellulose is a blown-in, eco-friendly option made from recycled paper, excellent for filling existing walls and attics. Spray foam (open- or closed-cell) seals air leaks and delivers high R-value per inch but costs the most and often needs professional installation. Rigid foam boards suit basement walls and exterior sheathing. Match the material to the location, R-value target, and your skill level.
Q5. Should insulation have a vapor barrier?
Whether you need a vapor barrier depends on your climate and assembly. In cold climates, a vapor retarder typically goes on the warm (interior) side of the insulation to keep moisture from condensing inside walls. In hot, humid climates the guidance differs, and some assemblies are designed to dry in both directions. Faced batts include a kraft-paper or foil vapor retarder; unfaced batts don’t. Check local building code and climate-specific guidance before choosing faced or unfaced insulation.
