Carbon Filter Lifespan Calculator

Where is the filter used?
Different applications have very different filter lifespans because the carbon faces very different loading conditions.

Usage
Moderate is typical indoor air with cooking smells and some pet odors. Heavy is wildfire smoke, heavy cooking, or pets indoors. Severe is grow rooms, smokers, or industrial environments.

Check the box or manual. Manufacturer ratings assume average use – actual life depends heavily on your conditions.

Activated carbon adsorbs odors and VOCs until it is “loaded” with molecules and cannot hold more. Unlike HEPA filters, carbon does not visibly clog – it just stops working. If you smell odors that the filter used to remove, the carbon is spent regardless of how it looks. Humidity above 60% can dramatically shorten carbon life by competing for adsorption sites.
