Estimate how much thread you need for any sewing project based on seam length, stitch type, and fabric layers.
Seam Details
Add up all seam lengths in your project. A standard shirt has roughly 200-300 inches of seams. A quilt top can have thousands.
Straight stitch uses approximately 2.5x the seam length in thread.
Common thread weights: 50 wt (all-purpose), 40 wt (embroidery), 30 wt (topstitching), 12 wt (heavy topstitch).
