Fence Picket Calculator

Fence dimensions
Total length is the running distance of fence. For an enclosed yard, add up all sides. Most residential fences are 6 ft tall.

Picket spacing
Solid privacy fences have pickets butted tight. Shadowbox alternates pickets on each side of the rail for privacy with airflow. Spaced is the classic open look.
For solid fences, set gap to 0. For wood that will shrink, use 0.125 (1/8″) for spacing. Spaced fences typically use 2-3 inches.

Posts and rails
8 ft is the most common spacing (matches lumber lengths). 6 ft is stronger and looks more substantial. Never go beyond 8 ft.

Post holes should be 1/3 the total post height deep, and below frost line in cold climates. Set posts in concrete with the lumber a few inches above the ground to prevent rot. Pre-drill picket nail holes near the ends to avoid splitting. Stain or seal wood within 6 months of installation.
