Flagstone Coverage Calculator

Patio area

Flagstone type
Irregular flagstone has natural shapes – the most cuts and waste. Cut rectangular pieces fit precisely. Random pattern uses pre-cut rectangles in a Roman/Versailles layout.
1.5-2 inch is standard for walkable patios on sand bedding. 1 inch is for mortared patios on a slab. 3+ inch is for stepping stones or driveways.

Installation
Tight joints look formal but require precise cuts. Wide joints filled with creeping ground cover or polymeric sand give a relaxed look and forgive irregular shapes.

Flagstone is sold by the ton or by the pallet. Coverage per ton depends on thickness – typically 80-120 sq ft for 1.5″ stone. Always order 15-20% extra for waste, especially with irregular flagstone where you’ll discard many pieces during fitting. Plan to dry-lay the entire patio before committing to mortar or polymeric sand.
