Garage dimensions
Measure the interior of the garage. A typical 2-car garage is 20-22 ft wide and 20-22 ft deep. Don’t forget headroom – taller ceilings let you use overhead racks.
What’s parked inside?
A typical car footprint is 6 ft x 16 ft. Trucks and SUVs add 1-2 ft. Allow 3 ft on each side and 2 ft in front and behind for safe walking and door opening.
Storage methods you’ll use
Ceiling racks store seasonal items above vehicles. Each typical 4 ft x 8 ft rack holds about 600 lbs of bins and luggage.

Maximizing garage storage means thinking vertically. The floor is the worst place to store anything – it blocks walking paths and gets wet, dusty, and chewed by mice. Walls and ceilings can hold massive amounts of weight with proper anchoring (stud-mounted shelves and ceiling racks bolted into joists). Aim to keep at least 4 ft of clear walking space around vehicles.
