7 Tips for Measuring and Installing Baseboards

Tip 1: Accurate Measurements Are Essential—Measure Every Wall Section

Baseboards don’t always run the full length of a wall in one piece. Measure each continuous wall section separately, accounting for door openings, corners, and transitions between room spaces. Use a steel tape measure (not a cloth one—it stretches) and measure from corner to corner at floor level. Write down each measurement immediately so you don’t forget which wall it belongs to. A small error in one wall can throw off your entire material order.

Tip 2: Account for Door and Window Openings in Your Total Length

Baseboards don’t extend across door frames or window sills—they stop at the edge of the door/window opening and resume on the other side. Subtract the width of each opening from your running wall total. For a standard 32-inch interior door, subtract 32 inches from that wall’s measurement. For multiple openings on the same wall, subtract each one individually, then add them all up for the accurate linear footage you’ll need to order.

Tip 3: Add 10-15% Extra Material for Waste and Mistakes

Baseboards are cut and installed with saw angles at corners—these cuts sometimes require re-cuts, and you may have sections that are damaged during installation. Professional installers plan for 10-15% waste. If your calculated total is 200 linear feet, order 220-230 linear feet. This cushion prevents the frustration of running short halfway through the job and discovering your color/style is no longer available.

Tip 4: Inside and Outside Corners Require Different Cut Angles

Inside corners (where two walls meet at 90 degrees, pointing into the room) need coped cuts—the end of one baseboard is shaped to fit tightly against the face of the other. Outside corners (where walls meet at 90 degrees pointing outward) need miter cuts at 45 degrees on each piece. These different cuts mean pieces from outside corners won’t work as inside corners, so don’t reuse off-cuts. Plan your cuts before starting to minimize waste.

Tip 5: Consider Material Type and Weight When Planning Installation

Wood baseboards are heavier and require nailing into studs—measure stud locations as you go. MDF baseboards are lighter and can be nailed into solid blocking or the rim board at the base of the wall. PVC/vinyl baseboards are lightest and very forgiving, but they expand and contract with temperature. Wood requires more precision; MDF and PVC allow for slightly faster installation. Choose material based on the room’s humidity (bathrooms favor PVC; living rooms work well with wood or MDF).

Tip 6: Running Length Includes All Walls—Don’t Miss Closets or Alcoves

Measure baseboards in closets, alcoves, and pantries just as you would main rooms. A master closet might add 15-25 feet of baseboard you initially forgot about. Walk the entire perimeter of every room and every closet, writing down each measurement. Some installers photograph each wall while holding a tape measure to verify measurements later.

Tip 7: Account for Transitions Between Different Baseboards

If you’re installing new baseboards only in some rooms and keeping old ones in others, measure carefully at doorways and transitions. New baseboards should meet old baseboards at doorways with a transition piece or a crisp 45-degree miter joint.
